Student worried for job market

Evan Carter is worried about
finding a job after graduation
next May.

     Evan Carter, a recreation and leisure studies major at the University of Georgia, is worried about the job market in her field.

     “Even though it’s a practical degree, no one really understands it,” said Carter during an interview on Monday. “They’ve dismissed me.”

     Carter said she was not aware of the Labor Department’s report on Friday that highlighted the decrease in people seeking jobs as the reason for the drop in unemployment rates, which currently sits at 7.6 percent.

     While recreation and leisure studies majors can find employment as event coordinators or recreation facility managers, Carter said that her dream job would be to travel. Carter said that travel agencies have positions where employees go abroad to plan itineraries for promoted vacation packages.

     Carter, a junior from Valdosta, said that she only knows that it is hard to find a job right now. If she is unsuccessful in her job search next year, she said she would settle for any job.

     She currently is preparing for an internship in May at her local church in Valdosta. Due to low funding at the church, Carter said the internship is unlikely to lead to a full-time position after graduation.

Carter plans to apply to many different job openings in the coming year and network more at career fairs and events hosted by the university.
